2nd World War Torgau - Haarlem
Last Thirsday I visited my very special 99 year old aunt, born in Friesland. We talked, as usual, about the 2nd worldwar when my father (her brother) was a prisoner of war in Torgau (during which he met his unforgettable Russian friend Alex from Orël). She sent him many parcels and letters full of hope for which he has been very greatfull his whole life. My aunt died Saturday.
Today I opened my father's iron case in which he had kept all the letters he had received and sent during his imprisonment. So many interesting things to read, also about Haarlem where my grandfather Sjoerd van der Schuit (resistance name van Swinderen, nickname: de Baron van Linschoten) was arrested with the Corry ten Boom-group (The Hiding Place) and sent to the Oranjehotel in Scheveningen.
