So many letters were written in pencil, (not easy to read after more than 80 years) because it had to be possible for the nazis to erase text. It is the first time since WWII that these Torgau/Haarlem letters see the daylight.

To see and almost be able to touch the Olympic Flame in Sainte Mère Église was an unforgettable experience. Tonight this flame has arrived in Paris: un spectacle vraiment magnifique.

BOOK: BUREAU SMEDESTRAAT 9

On 6-6-2024, the 80th D-Day in the City hall of Haarlem a very interesting book is presented by Guus Hartendorf about the resistance in Haarlem during the Second World War: 'Bureau Smedestraat 9'.

Guus is author (of more than 30 books), former police-commissioner, former-journalist and historian. To-day Guus visited us with his new book (a valuable gift) in which my grandfather Sjoerd is mentioned. For Guus, as a historian, I think it was also very special to enter the house of resistance fighter Van Beem because he knows and wrote so much about Johan van Beem.

MY GRANDFATHER WOII AND CORRIE TEN BOOM: NHA HAARLEM

To-day (after 80 years) I found in the archives of Noord-Holland (Noord-Hollands Archief) the proof that my brave, Frisian resistance-grandfather Sjoerd Baukes van der Schuit​​​​​​​ (then 64 years old) was imprisoned together with Corrie ten Boom & family and transported on the 29th of February 1944 to the SD Intelligence-service of the Nazi-prison Polizeigefängnis Scheveningen, now Museum Het Oranjehotel.

FILM 'KUNSTROOF' ABOUT THE KUNSTHAL ART-ROBBERY

We saw the film Kunstroof (Art-robbery) about the stolen Kunsthal - paintings/drawings of a.o. Monet, Freud, Gauguin (PGO) and the selfportrait of Meijer de Haan in Het Ketelhuis, Amsterdam. De Haan's selfportrait was also painted by me (exactly the same size: 32,4x2

FRANS HALS IN THE RIJKSMUSEUM

'Boy Playing the Violin' (my favourite and beautifully framed) was one of the lovely, loose and lively painted masterpieces by our* Frans Hals in Het Rijksmuseum.

Many paintings I had never seen before (a.o. The Laughing Cavalier), not even in The Frans Hals Museum.

*Frans lived and painted in my native city Haarlem

THE OLYMPIC FLAME IN SAINTE MÈRE ÉGLISE

To witness today the arrival of The Olympic Flame in Sainte Mère Église, (the first liberated village in La Manche Normandy, WWII) a historic event in the midst of so many enthusiastic americain soldiers (the 80th D-Day) and French civilians, was a privilege. Sitting under the 'parachutiste' John Steele before the church, 'JO bfmtv Normandie' even made me (a tiny) part of their broadcast.

AT LAST: VINCENT VAN GOGH IN PONT-AVEN, BRETAGNE

Vincent van Gogh wanted so much to visit Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven but that never happened. Now, too many years after his death, Vincents spirit is finally in Pont-Aven, the village of his friends Gauguin and Meijer de Haan. In Le Musée des Beaux Arts his painting of Eugène Boch can be admired: the Anna Boch-exhibition (Eugène's sister). I just saw this painting (a loan from le Musée d'Orsay) in my favourite Breton Museum. It is absolutely wonderful, Vincent!
