    The big canvas was too white so covering it with a lot of paint including a lot of yellow ocre, eased the sketch of L. et La Statue.

  • PONT-AVEN: LA NUIT DES MUSÉES

    Pont-Aven inspired me the way I had hoped for. Not only the paintings of Lucien Simon and the lithographs (Nuit Européenne des Musées) in the 'new' Musée des Beaux Arts (I made little dwg.'s surrounded by music in La Salle Julia), but also the kind painters of Pont-Aven. The day after we went to Troc where we had très bonnes crêpes and such an unforgettable friendly conversation with the Bretons there. Merci et Kenavo!

  • LEYSIN, SCHWEIZ

    To-morrow my granddaughter Thirza is leaving for Leysin (Schweiz) to make measurements of a glacier. After that: going down into the valley to make measurements there too. How extroardinary life can be for a 16-year old. Wish I could be with her to draw!

  • SKETCHING THE DRAWBRIDGE

    After we visited to-day the impressive exhibition of Romanovs & Revolution, welcomed by beautiful tulipes, my sister and I made sketches of the drawbridge and people passing by while we were sitting in the lounge of The Hermitage, Amsterdam. We were in good company: monsieur Ernst Veen, the former director of The Hermitage was working there too.

  • BRUSH No. 000

    Marja gave me a véry thin brush (000) which belonged to her mother-in-law who was a Hindeloopen-painter. The Hindeloopen Art-work is a typical traditional Dutch way of painting: furniture, wooden boxes etc. I used the brush for my 13x18 oilpainting of V., The Child & The Statue. Working with it reminded me of the kind Palech Painter I spoke with in De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam . .  years ago.

  • THE BIG BELCANTO BUILDING

    This building is one of the most inspiring places in Haarlem. When I arrived on my bike, people were (as usual) having their drinks around this art-colony, while they talked about art & showed eachother their latest creations.
